As rescue workers throughout the night combed the rubble of a wing of the 12-story beachfront residential building Champlain Towers South in Surfside, just north of Miami Beach, hopes of finding more survivors have faded. Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava told reporters on Friday morning, according to NBC News, that there were 120 people accounted for from the building and 159 people unaccounted for, adding that the death toll had gone from one to four....

Residents of 5050 NW 7th Street, in Miami’s Flagami neighborhood, were told Monday night they had until 8 a.m. on Tuesday to pack whatever they could and leave, WFOR-TV, a Miami-based television news station, reported. The building had more than 130 units. Video from WFOR shows people leaving, carrying their belongings in whatever they could find—including garbage bags and storage bins. The building has structural issues, and the building’s engineer had been working with the city to make repairs, WFOR reported....

The Hurricanes announced Reed’s injury Friday, one day after he had the surgery on what university officials described as a “left lower extremity.” He was injured in an offseason workout earlier in the week. Frank Pichel is accused of flashing a badge and claiming to be a Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy in the Florida Keys this past May. Court records obtained by The Miami Herald indicate that a judge signed a warrant for Pitchel for the felony charge but he has not yet been arrested. Monroe County Sheriff Rick Ramsay said that his deputies notified the mayoral candidate’s attorney about the warrant and asked him to surrender but, “this has not happened....

Police believe the man, who hasn’t yet been identified, was linked to Jeremy Willie Horton, a 32-year-old Georgian man suspected of shooting and seriously injuring Miami-Dade Police Officer Cesar Echaverry on Monday night, in a separate incident. Officers later killed Horton, while Echaverry remains in a “critical condition” in hospital. Tuesday’s shooting took place when officers from the Special Response Team confronted a man, armed with an AK-47 style rifle, at an Extended Stay America hotel....
