The Georgia lawmaker has joined other conservative voices in opposing the move, which was announced by White House spokesperson Jen Psaki and U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy.
“We’ve increased disinformation research and tracking within the surgeon general’s office,” Psaki said on Thursday, adding, “We’re flagging problematic posts for Facebook that spread disinformation.”
Psaki said that around a dozen people produce nearly two-thirds of all anti-vaccine misinformation on social media. While some may be blocked on some social media platforms, she said they are not blocked on Facebook.
She said that her administration was collaborating with medical professionals to ensure that “trusted content” on the disease would be put out to the public.
Meanwhile, Murthy said that “health misinformation has led people to resist wearing masks in high-risk settings” turn down treatments and reject vaccines. “This has led to avoidable illnesses and deaths,” he added.
A Facebook spokesperson told Newsweek earlier that it was taking action to combat COVID-19 misinformation and had so far removed more than 18 million pieces of misinformation-related content.
However, Greene took exception to the move by the White House, tweeting on Friday: “This is how communism starts.”
“The White House is working with Facebook to censor your post which is violating your free speech because people want to discuss (on FB) a NON-FDA approved vaccine that the Biden admin wants to force you to take,” she added.
As of Friday morning her post had been retweeted over 5,500 times, and liked over 15,000 times.
Greene has repeatedly urged Americans to avoid the COVID vaccine in messages that combine an anti-vaccine message with claims about censorship.
Earlier this month, she claimed that “thousands” were reporting “life changing vaccine side effects” adding that social media “is censoring their stories & the media is silent.”
She finished her tweet with the phrase, “just say NO!” in an apparent nod to the catchphrase used in the 1980s by the Reagan administration in the war on drugs.
Meanwhile, she has faced condemnation for comparing mask mandates in the Capitol to measures enacted in Nazi Germany, for which she apologized.
She made another Nazi comparison with a Biden administration plan for a door-to-door campaign to encourage vaccination against COVID.
“They don’t need your medical brown shirts showing up at their door ordering vaccinations,” she tweeted, referring to the notorious paramilitary group that facilitated Hitler’s rise to power. Jewish groups condemned her comments.
Newsweek has contacted Greene’s office and the White House for comment.
