It’s an event for golfers, families and spectators alike and one full of nostalgia like Jack Nicklaus and Gary Player, who always find their ways around the course.
But is the event, which began in 1960, indicative of success during the actual Masters? Well, let’s take a look at how the past 10 winners of the event have fared in the year’s first major:
One top-5 finish, just two in the top 10 and four missed cuts. Not the greatest of results from a small sampling.
So winning the event does not mean you’re going to play well over the weekend. Actually, it could allude to the fact you won’t play well and might not even make it to the weekend.
No man who has won the Par-3 Contest has ever won the Masters on the same weekend. Raymond Floyd came the closest to accomplishing the feat in 1990 as he lost in a playoff and finished as runner-up.
So it’s a fun event to play but not necessarily one you want to win if you want to compete over the weekend at Augusta National.
