While Colt led Texas to two BCS bowl games, a Big 12 title and was one win shy of a national championship, Case has spent his career as part-time starter, most-of-the-time backup.

But McCoy will start for Texas (3-2, 2-0) against No. 12 Oklahoma (5-0, 2-0) Saturday because David Ash remains sidelined with lingering concussion symptoms.

It will be up to McCoy to try to end Texas' three-game losing skid to the Sooners and add a little depth to the McCoy family legacy.

The Texas-Oklahoma game tends to have high stakes for Longhorns quarterbacks, and McCoy said Monday he's embracing his chance for fame or infamy.

"This is a game that I could be remembered for the rest of my life," McCoy said. "I'm preparing and (practicing) for a game I'll be remembered for forever."

McCoy's uneven career has produced uneven results, but his belief in himself has never been shaken--even after he was overtaken by Ash as the full-time starter this year.

The Texas-Oklahoma rivalry, played in the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, with the stadium split 50-50 in burnt orange and crimson, has been known to rattle players, notably quarterbacks. Colt McCoy handled it and was 3-1 against the Sooners.

USC: PHONY REPS MAKE CALLS

Apparently even people who don't work for Southern California are trying to hire the Trojans' next football coach.

USC athletic director Pat Haden said Monday that two people pretending to be representatives of his school have contacted two coaches and attempted to discuss the Trojans' coaching vacancy with them.

USC has identified the posers and is taking "appropriate action," the school said in a blog post on its official website. The Trojans (3-2, 0-2 Pac-12) fired Lane Kiffin on Sept. 29 and installed Ed Orgeron as their interim coach while Haden looks for a new leader for one of the nation's highest-profile programs.

Haden said somebody pretending to be a USC official repeatedly tried to speak to an unnamed member of the Denver Broncos' coaching staff about the opening.

Another phony school representative contacted Tony Dungy, the former Tampa Bay and Indianapolis coach.

Dungy talked about his apparent contact with USC on a national radio show Monday, saying he turned down the representative and outlining what the Trojans need in a new coach.

"Tony's discussion on the radio today of being contacted by USC was a complete surprise to us," Haden said. "So were the calls made to the Broncos. I can assure you no authorized representative of USC or our athletic department made these calls."

GOOD NEWS FOR RAIDERS QB

Texas Tech coach Kliff Kingsbury said Monday that starting quarterback Baker Mayfield's right knee has no structural damage after the freshman was hurt during the No. 20 Red Raiders' win at Kansas.

The walk-on's injury doesn't "appear to be a season-ending type," Kingsbury said. "Timetable-wise, I'm not sure yet but that was good news."

Kingsbury said he's not sure whether Mayfield will start or even play against Iowa State this week.

Mayfield went down with seconds left in the third quarter, tackled while he was in the pocket attempting a pass. He hobbled very slowly off the field with someone helping him under each arm. A short time later, he left the field on crutches.

Mayfield, ranked No. 18 in the nation in passing, threw for 368 yards and a touchdown and ran 19 yards for another score before being replaced by backup Davis Webb. For the season, Mayfield is 132 for 201 for 1,488 yards, eight touchdowns and five interceptions.

Texas Tech is 5-0 for the first time since 2008 when the Red Raiders achieved their highest ranking ever, climbing to No. 2 after beating No. 1 Texas in Lubbock.

TIGHT END LEAVING OREGON

Tight end Colt Lyerla is leaving No. 2 Oregon because of personal reasons.

Lyerla did not travel with the Ducks to their game at Colorado on Saturday. Coach Mark Helfrich said after the 57-16 victory that the junior was suspended for a game for violating team rules.

The nature of the violation wasn't disclosed.

Lyerla told Oregon's athletics website that his withdrawal from the Ducks on Sunday had nothing to do with that suspension.

"I love everyone at Oregon; everyone's on good terms, I believe," Lyerla said. "Just for my own benefit, it was time to move on."

MICHIGAN DT OUT FOR SEASON

Michigan defensive tackle Ondre Pipkins will miss the rest of the season after tearing an anterior cruciate ligament in one of his knees during Saturday's win over Minnesota.

The team announced the loss Monday. Pipkins, a sophomore, had appeared in all five games, totaling seven tackles.

When the 18th-ranked Wolverines (5-0, 1-0) play at Penn State (3-2, 0-1) on Saturday, however, their inexperienced defense could get a boost from the return of one of its leaders.

Though a little coy about the likelihood of Jake Ryan's return during a Monday press conference, coach Brady Hoke said doctors have cleared the All-Big Ten linebacker, who has been sidelined since suffering a knee injury in March. Hoke said Ryan is "wanting to play," but that the coaching staff will evaluate him throughout the week to be sure "he can do the things he's capable of doing."

Ryan led the team in tackles (88), tackles for loss (16) and sacks (4.5) last season.

THREE BOWL GAMES ADDED FOR 2014

The crowded bowl season will become even more crowded in 2014, according to an ESPN report.

The network reported that three bowl games will be added to the calendar to accommodate the five smaller FBS conferences (American Athletic, Conference USA, Mid-American, Mountain West and Sun Belt). The games will be played in the Bahamas, Boca Rotan, Fla., and Miami beginning next season.

The new bowls will have a unique framework in that the five conferences "will provide the teams as part of a coalition," ESPN reported, citing sources.

The five conferences and bowls will work together to decide the bowl matchups each year.

The Camellia Bowl in Montgomery, Ala., another new 2014 bowl for smaller conferences, had been announced by the MAC and Sun Belt in August.

"The non-power leagues were denied opportunities in other bowls, so they had to create opportunities for their teams," an unnamed source told ESPN.

With the four new bowls, there will be a total of 39, including the College Football Playoff title game, in the 2014 season.

Another new game in 2014 will be played in Detroit between the Big Ten and ACC. It replaces the Little Caesars Bowl, which also has been held in Detroit.
