The heartbreaking romantic drama follows the complicated love life of Styles’ Tom Burgess, a married policeman who embarks on a same-sex affair with a Brighton-based museum curator. The movie flicks between two timelines, featuring the young Tom, his wife Marion, and his lover Patrick in the 1950s and the present day.
My Policeman is an adaptation of the 2012 novel of the same name by Bethan Roberts which was loosely inspired by the life of E.M. Forster. The romance between him and policeman Bob Buckingham served as inspiration for her love story between Patrick and Tom.
Newsweek has everything you need to know about the cast and characters of My Policeman.

PC Tom Burgess — Harry Styles
Harry Styles portrays PC Tom Burgess in My Policeman, his first major lead role in a movie.
In My Policeman, Tom is a hard-working young policeman who falls in love with local schoolteacher Marion. However, he also has undeniable feelings for Patrick, a museum curator, and begins a long, passionate affair, risking everything.
The Grammy-winning singer recently starred in Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling as Jack Chambers, starring opposite Florence Pugh and Chris Pine.
Styles also played in Christopher Nolan’s Dunkirk as Alex and in Eternals as Eros/Starfox.
At the moment, there is no news of Styles embarking on any other acting projects, as he is currently on his worldwide tour titled Love On Tour.
Older Tom Burgess — Linus Roache
Linus Roache stars as an older Tom Burgess in My Policeman.
When audiences meet older Tom at the beginning of the movie, he is distant from Marion, angry she has agreed to let Patrick live with them after he suffered a stroke.
Roache is best known for his role as Michael Cutter in Law & Order, Ecbert in Vikings, and David in Homeland.
Audiences may also recognize him from his roles in RFK, The Gathering Storm, Priest, Batman Begins and Mandy.
Speaking to Metro about playing in My Policeman, Roache said he hopes audiences reflect on the struggles the LGBTQ+ community faced in the past and continue to face.
He said: “I hope the audience have a little bit of gratitude and remembrance for the 1950s and that it was illegal to love who you wanted to love, and that maybe we live in better times even though we’ve got a way to go, and the pain of not being true to who you really are. "
Marion Taylor — Emma Corrin
Golden Globe-winning actress Emma Corrin plays the role of Marion in My Policeman, Tom’s sweet and loving wife.
Corrin is best known for their role as Princess Diana in Season 4 of The Crown and Esme in Pennyworth.
They will star in the upcoming Netflix movie, Lady Chatterley’s Lover, appearing opposite Jack O’Connell.
Older Marion Taylor — Gina McKee
Gina McKee portrays an older Marion Taylor in My Policeman.
For an older Marion, it becomes clear that the lives of Tom, Patrick and her will forever be intertwined.
McKee won the 1997 BAFTA Award for Best Actress for her performance as Mary Cox in Our Friends in the North. She is also well known for her roles in The Lost Prince and The Street.
She also starred as Bella in Notting Hill, Countess Henrietta Harding in Phantom Thread, Countess Bruce in Catherine the Great and Anne Sampson in Bodyguard.
Speaking to MovieWeb about her character Marion in her later years, McKee said: “It’s kind of intriguing to understand somebody like Marion. Now, on the one hand, it’s very easy to understand, and on the other hand, perhaps you have to really look at the circumstances in which all three of them found themselves when they were young, and the prejudices and the hatred, and the ignorance that surrounded them, and what that does to how they behave is really integral… revisiting the facts that surrounded 1950s Britain and the way that the gay community was being treated in this country… it was fascinating to be reminded of it and to have the timeframe in front of me.
“It made me focus on what their challenges were… We make progress, but if we’re not careful, that progress can be threatened with a reversal. Those elements were really interesting to me as well.”
Patrick Hazlewood — David Dawson
David Dawson stars as Patrick Hazlewood in My Policeman.
Patrick is a museum curator who befriends Tom and Marion, falling hopelessly in love with Tom, despite him being married.
The character of Patrick is loosely based on English author E.M. Forster, who was in a long-term secret relationship with Bob Buckingham, a married policeman.
Audiences may recognize Dawson from his role as King Alfred in The Last Kingdom and Joseph Merrick in Year of the Rabbit.
His other credits include Luther, Ripper Street, and The Secret Agent.
Older Patrick Hazlewood — Rupert Everett
Rupert Everett portrays an older Patrick in My Policeman.
Sadly, in the present day, Rupert has suffered a debilitating stroke and Marion allows him to live with her and Tom, much to the latter’s frustration.
Forster, whom Patrick is based on, died of a stroke on June 7, 1970, at the age of 91 at the home of Bob and May Buckingham in Coventry in central England.
Everett is best known for his Golden Globe-nominated performances as George in My Best Friend’s Wedding and Lord Goring in An Ideal Husband.
My Policeman is out in theaters now and is coming to Prime Video on Friday, November 4.
