The family friend told WNCN that Lotz has suffered from diabetic seizures the past several years and is on dialysis.

Lotz, a former dentist in the Raleigh area, was a sophomore on coach Frank McGuire’s 1957 North Carolina team that defeated Wilt Chamberlain’s Kansas team, 54-53, in triple overtime to win the NCAA title.

Steve Kirschner, a spokesman for UNC athletics, said in a statement Tuesday: “Our prayers are with Danny and his family. … He’s a wonderful man, and we are all hopeful that he will have a full recovery.”
