Memphis president David Rudd’s Twitter mentions were filled with UM fans who expressed various levels of displeasure with the decision, citing the state in which he left the basketball program when he bolted for Kentucky following the 2009 season.
The responses varied from gentle disagreement to near outrage as the coach left for Kentucky while the program was under investigation from the NCAA. The program eventually had its 2008 Final Four appearance vacated as part of NCAA punishment.
For his part, Calipari seemed moved by the gesture.
Memphis plans to honor Calipari with a two-day day event Dec. 28-29.
