Mets general manager Sandy Alderson tried to pump up the  incumbent shortstop Wilmer Flores at the general managers meetings, all the while knowing that he’s searching for Flores’ replacement.

From ESPNNewYork.com’s Adam Rubin:

Boiled down: He’s stiff as a board in the field, but his bat is playable, so he’s the shortstop for now.

Flores’ rumored successors (all via trade) include such luminaries as the Diamondbacks’ Didi Gregorius and the Mariners tandem of Brad Miller and Chris Taylor. Starlin Castro has been the hot rumor for months, but the Cubs are in no hurry to deal their 25-year-old All-Star.

If the Mets do acquire a shortstop, they could move Flores to second base and trade Daniel Murphy, who’s entering his walk year. Or, they can keep Murphy and make the 23-year-old Flores the utility infielder.
