Shiffrin won the past three world championships in slalom and appeared on course for a fourth until Saturday. Before taking part in competition in Sweden, Shiffrin, 20, injured her right knee.

It looked bad, and Shiffrin had tests done in Sweden before returning to the United States for additional evaluation. Doctors determined she had a partial tear in the medial collateral ligament and nasty bone bruise. The recommendation: rest and therapy.

“I will be skiing by the end of the season, maybe training at full capacity,” she told The Denver Post on Tuesday. “But back to competing before the end of the World Cup season, unlikely.”

Video posted on her Facebook page showed Shiffrin on an exercise bike with her knee in a heavy brace.

Shiffrin lives in Vail, Colo. She won the Alpine season’s first two slalom races, both in Aspen. Now she will be home for Christmas for the first time in six years.

The 2014 Olympic champion, Shiffrin also won the 2014 and ‘15 World Cup slalom titles.

Alpine skiing season, with events including downhill and giant slalom, runs through mid-March.

Shiffrin was injured while freestyle skiing before her event. Lindsey Vonn won the slalom race in her absence.
