Chilean biotechnologist Nadac Reales has been working with extremophiles, organisms that are capable of living in conditions of extreme temperature, acidity, alkalinity, or chemical concentration, in her lab. The 33-year-old researcher hopes that the organism, an iron-oxidizing bacteria called Leptospirillum, could be used to clean up mining waste, a major source of pollution in Chile. The concept originally occurred to Reales when she was in university and conducting research into the use of microorganisms to extract copper at a mining facility....

Just days after losing Yoenis Cespedes to an ankle injury, the Mets will sign Matt Kemp to a minor league deal weeks after he was released by the Reds. Kemp was released after he batted .200 with a home run and five RBIs in 60 at-bats for the Reds. In CCTV footage circulated on social media, Las Margaritas Mayor Jorge Luis Escandon Hernandez is apparently seen being pulled through Santa Rita after he was abducted from his office, BBC News reported. The 17-second video dated October 8, 2019, which appears to have originated from local news outlet Portavoz Chiapas yesterday, shows a man in blue trousers and a white shirt being dragged along a road as bystanders look on....

With a number of El Tri’s top players getting rest or playing limited minutes, it’s hardly a match that should cause concern for Mexico. In fact, it allowed us to get clarity on which players are headed to Russia and who perhaps is in manager Juan Carlos Osorio’s plans for the future. We also can take plenty away from the match tactically, with Osorio again wandering from his 4-3-3 to play a five-man back line and shift things around in the midfield....

But the team is still intact, getting ready for Sunday’s match against Portugal in Moscow. These games are horrible, existing only for tournament organizers to put on another match, get another game for rights holders to broadcast and for fans to buy tickets to. Would there be that much of a difference between a Mexico win, meaning the team finished third, or a loss, meaning it finished fourth? No. Either way, Mexico didn’t make the final and didn’t win the tournament....

Here is the good, the bad and the ugly from the decisive Group A clash. The good Rafa Marquez comes through: As recently as a year ago, it seemed that Rafa Marquez’s storied Mexico career was over. However, a move from MLS to Leon led to a resurgence in his club career, which eventually resulted in the resurrection of his international career. In September 2013, Marquez was recalled into the Mexico setup, and he hasn’t looked back since....
